Augmented Reality App Increases Access to Simulated Operating Rooms for Nursing Students

In partnership with the GVSU Interprofessional Simulation Center, the IT Innovation + Research team is developing an augmented reality application for Microsoft HoloLens 2 this summer that allows nursing students to experience a life-sized operating room before shadowing in person. The app in development is called Sterile Field Visualization.

This app and collaboration address a critical need for GVSU students. Due to capacity constraints, only one student from Grand Rapids area colleges can shadow in a Corewell Health operating room each day. Using this app, students can navigate a virtual operating room. They will be able to familiarize themselves with details such as the boundaries of the sterilized field or the functions of key members of the team.

The technology will be incorporated into the Sim Center's Immersive Interactive rooms, which have wall-to-wall touch-sensitive screens, introducing new content and revitalizing previous innovations.
