1 Device features (e.g., such as audio/video streaming or screen mirroring) that require the home audio/video device to be on the same network as the connecting device will not work

2 Roku does not support all of the Wi-Fi frequencies (channels) used by the campus wireless network. The device may be able to connect to nearby APs configured on supported channels, but signal levels may be low or unreliable.

Unsupported Devices

Device Type

Operating System

Unsupported Reason

Gaming System

Nintendo Wii (Original)

The Nintendo Wii requires support for 802.11b, which is disabled on the campus wireless network. (Will connect to Wired Ethernet port with Wii supported Ethernet adapter.)

Gaming System

PlayStation 3

Network card driver prevents connection to SSID with MAB (MAC Authentication Bypass).

Home Audio/Video

Google Home

In order to complete setup, the Google Home requires that both the Home and the phone be on the same SSID and IP address space.

Home Audio/Video 2

Chromecast

Chromecast requires both the casting device and the display be on RFC 1918 network addressing which is not in use on the GVSU network.

Smart TV

Element brand (some models)

Some Element brand TVs will not work on an ‘Open’ WiFi network. GV-GameNet uses ‘Open’ WiFi with MAC-based Authentication. (Will connect to Wired Ethernet if TV has Ethernet port)
