Library Reserves

Course Reserve is similar to placing a hold on library items. Instead of holding that item for one person, it's held for an entire class, sometimes multiple classes. To ensure this ongoing access, reserved items follow specific policies, restrictions, and criteria.

Borrowing Policies

Course Reserve items:

  • Can't be held or renewed for individuals
  • Have short loan times (often a few hours)
  • Should be returned to the same location
  • Will be charged a fee if not returned promptly
  • Stay reserved the entire semester

Review the full list of library borrowing policies.

Item Restrictions

Not all library materials are eligible:

  • Online Resources
  • 3-D Objects (kits, maps, games, etc.)
  • Non-Circulating Items (reference, archives, etc.)

Course Reserve items must be owned by the library. We may be able to accept donations or purchase new texts. Check with your Subject Librarian for options.

Request Criteria

Requests should:

  • Be approved by the course professor
  • Not exceed 10 items per course
  • Receive at least 5 check-outs for re-approval

Course Reserve decisions are guided by data. Potential exceptions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Reserve Process

Professors are welcome to request items for Course Reserve at any time.

  1. Work with your Subject Librarian
  2. Find library-owned texts
  3. Submit your request using the form

After submitting a request, you can expect:

  • An automated email from [email protected]
  • Personalized follow-up emails from the Library Course Reserve Team
  • Confirmation email with links to your completed request

Electronic Resources

Library E-Reserve

The University Libraries no longer manage electronic Course Reserves.

Faculty can add electronic resource links directly to their Blackboard courses. Linking directly to the libraries' resources allows us to collect accurate usage statistics. This impacts library decisions about renewing license agreements.

For assistance finding resources for your course, contact your Subject Librarian.

Blackboard Links

Faculty can add a list of weblinks directly in Blackboard.

Information Technology (IT) created a guide on using the Library Search Tool in Blackboard. This is specifically useful for linking to the libraries' electronic resources. Remember to use the Link Fixer Tool to ensure off-campus access to the e-resource.

For assistance with Blackboard, contact your eLearning Liaison from IT.

Copyright Notice

The University Libraries follow copyright compliance for all active resources.

Non-library resources need to be verified for compliance. If you plan to share any non-library resources (files or links) for your courses, first consult the libraries' copyright information. For questions about copyright compliance, contact our Scholarly Communications Team at [email protected].

Library Text Alternatives

Electronic Textbooks

We have several options for professors to use open-license textbooks. Browse options on our guide for Open Educational Resources. For a curated list, email your course syllabus to our team at [email protected].

Digitized Videos

We may be able to convert a library-owned DVD to a digital format. Faculty can complete this request form. Our staff will determine if the video meets fair use guidelines. Please be aware this may take up to 2 weeks.

Document Delivery

We may be able to send you materials from other libraries. Review the Document Delivery Policies, which clearly state we can't provide textbooks or course reserve materials. Also review our copyright information before sharing any items from Document Delivery.
