Banned Books Week

September 23, 2024

Banned Books Week

September 22-28 is Banned Books Week. It is an annual event that highlights the value of free and open access to information. Libraries around the world "celebrate" by encouraging you to read banned books.

In 2023, challenges to books in public libraries increased by 92%. School libraries also faced an 11% increase. As a library, we stand for your right to make choices about what you read.

At the Steelcase Library and Frey Foundation Learning Commons, we have displays of some of the most common books that face challenges. Taylor Solomon, Access Services Specialist for the University Libraries, created the displays. She also created a companion quiz in the Steelcase Reading Room. Take the quiz to see if you can guess why books like Twilight and Harry Potter are challenged!
