Special Multi-Instructor Course Sections

The LIFT system is built to handle team-taught courses when it's a simple case where each student receives instruction from each of 2 or more instructors.  However, at GVSU, we have various instances of courses with a more complex structure.  If your unit has courses where all of the students are registered in a single Banner course section, but the students are actually taught by (and need to evaluate) different combinations of instructors, you'll need to make a special arrangement with the Office of Institutional Analysis (OIA) to set up the evaluations.

You will need to provide Institutional Analysis with a file declaring which students go with which instructors.  OIA will provide a template file to show the format those data need to be in.  You will need to provide the correct information at least 3 weeks before the first evaluations are to start (but it is HIGHLY recommended that you allow more time than that).  The sequence of activities in each semester will be:

  • Coordinator supplies Excel file with correct student-instructor pairings
  • OIA processes the file and creates new shadow course sections with the correct pairings in the LIFT system
  • Coordinator schedules LIFT evaluations in the shadow sections (the same way they do for traditional sections)
  • Faculty review scheduled evaluations and add additional questions if desired
  • Students receive invitations and complete evaluations

Example: The Banner course BRR 101 01 is actually a seminar taught by Dr. Brown and a field placement.  The field placements are supervised by Drs. White, Green, Black, and Gray.  Each student should evaluate Dr. Brown and the appropriate field supervisor.  The coordinator would submit a file to OIA similar to this:

OIA would process the file and creates 5 new course sections in the LIFT system, with the appropriate students in each:

  • BRR 101 01a ... Brown, Angela ... Intro to BRR (Seminar)
  • BRR 101 01b ... Black, Brian ... Intro to BRR (Field)
  • BRR 101 01c ... Gray, Gerald ... Intro to BRR (Field)
  • BRR 101 01d ... Green, Gina ... Intro to BRR (Field)
  • BRR 101 01e ... White, Wayne ... Intro to BRR (Field)

The Coordinator can then schedule evaluations for these new sections and instructors can add questions.
