Moriah Muscaro '15 Feature Twirler Endowed Scholarship

Initiator

Established by Moriah Muscaro who was the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Feature Twirler from 2011-2015. During her time at GVSU, she competed on the state, national, and international level, bringing home 20 national championships for the Lakers. Throughout her 17-year-long career, she netted 37 national championships and countless regional and state championships. She was the 2015 College Miss Majorette of America, 2015 Senior National Rhythmic Twirl Champion, 2014 Grand National Collegiate Champion and qualified to represent the United States of America in Women's 1-Baton Solo at the World Baton Twirling Championships in Italy in April of 2015. There, she was named fourth in the world in the 1-baton event. 

She is an 8-time Junior Olympic Baton Twirling Gold Medalist, an 8-time Miss Majorette of Michigan, and a 3-time Miss Majorette of the Great Lakes Champion. Moriah initiated a fundraiser for the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital by running an annual "Twirler for a Day" clinic, allowing local area girls to experience a Laker game day, which netted nearly $1,200 for the hospital. In addition to twirling endeavors, Moriah was a part of the Cook Leadership academy, College of Liberal and Sciences Student Advisory Committee, Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU), and volunteered at local nursing homes and the Oasis of Hope Medical Center. Moriah was the Outstanding Student in Chemistry for 2011-2012, named a Biomedical Sciences Graduate of Distinction for 2014-2015, and was the recipient of the Excellence-in-a-Discipline in Biomedical Sciences Award in 2014-2015. Moriah graduated Summa Cum Laude (4.0) with her Bachelors in Biomedical Sciences in April of 2015 and began her journey through medical school to become a physician at the University of Toledo College of Medicine.

Purpose

To attract talented twirlers to the GVSU Marching Band.

Qualifications

1. Recipients for this scholarship shall have been accepted for or are currently enrolled at Grand Valley State University.

2. They must be an undergraduate enrolled for 12 credit hours or more in any course of study.

3. All candidates who audition to become a twirler in the GVSU Marching Band will be considered for this scholarship.

Application Procedure

Candidates for this scholarship will audition for the twirling position in the GVSU Marching Band.

Selection Process

The recipients will be chosen by the GVSU Marching Band Director.

Scholarship Specifications

Scholarships will be awarded annually provided there are candidates who meet the qualification criteria. Award amounts and numbers of scholarships will be determined by funds available and renewing recipients.

This scholarship may be renewed without reapplication (audition) provided the recipient continues to meet the qualifications stated herein. This scholarship may be awarded to an individual recipient for a maximum of eight (8) semesters.
