Carl Arendsen's Profile

Carl was the sole mathematics faculty member at College IV during its first two years, and he developed the modules for the mathematics courses from basic arithmetic skills through calculus. Carl was among the first in the department to adopt the Turning Point software in his classes, allowing him to receive in-class, anonymous (to the students) feedback from students on their understanding as the class progresses. Carl was always willing to take on important service roles. During the 1975-76 year, Carl assumed the duties of Acting Dean of College IV. In addition, Carl served as an Assistant Chair in the Department of Mathematics 2001-2002.

Carl provided many vital contributions to his community. Starting in 1992, he took on the important role of overseeing scorekeeping at the regional Science Olympiad held at GVSU. He continued in that position until 2003. Carl is an avid golfer, and he often volunteered to help the GVSU men’s and women’s golf teams. In the broader community, Carl also served as a member of the Allendale Township Fire Department from 1979 to 1997.
