Gary Klingler's Profile
Gary brought a wealth of teaching experiences with him to GVSU, including six years of teaching secondary mathematics, as well as serving as an Assistant Professor at three other institutions (Clarion University of Pennsylvania -- Venango Campus, the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, and Michigan Technological University). Gary's PhD in K-12 Curriculum and Instruction added to our growing community of mathematics educators. During his early years at GVSU, Gary was involved in developing relationships with local school district administrators and teachers. One of his roles was as GVSU site coordinator for the Making Mathematics Accessible to All Staff Development Project. Gary later became interested in the history of mathematics, giving many presentations in that area. In the later years of his career, Gary devoted his teaching energies to our developmental mathematics courses. He served as course coordinator for Algebra (MTH 110) and Chair of our department's Foundations Committee.
In the broader community, Gary was an appointed member of the City of Holland Human Relations Commission, a civic group ensuring social justice in the city of Holland and promoting and encouraging cultural diversity and strong community relations. Gary was elected Chair of this commission in 2006 and served in that role for a year. Sadly, Gary passed away in 2020.
