Lisa Kasmer
Lisa retired in August 2024, concluding a 47-year teaching career that spanned both K-12 and higher education. After teaching at the K-12 level for 31 years, she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics education in 2008 and spentthe next 16 years preparing future mathematics teachers, including 14 years at GVSU. Lisa was a dedicated and innovative educator, teaching 13 different courses at GVSU and focusing on the preparation of mathematics teachers at both elementary and secondary levels. She also mentored undergraduate students in research, guiding more than 20 honors thesis projects. Lisa’s teaching excellence was recognized with the PEW Teaching Excellence Award in 2015.
Lisa made her mark in mathematics education research, with 55 presentations and 25 publications, including articles and book chapters. She also played a leadership role in major grants, such as a $1.2 million NSF grant and a Kellogg Foundation STEM project with Battle Creek Public Schools.
One of her most enduring contributions was creating and leading the Tanzania Study Abroad program, which began during her first year at GVSU in 2010. This month-long immersive program gave future teachers the opportunity to teach in Tanzanian schools, connect with local communities, and gain a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. The program has been a transformative experience for students and remains a vital part of GVSU's offerings.
