The most helpful aspects of my undergraduate education in mathematics were: The most helpful aspect has been being able to assess complex problems at a high level and break them down into smaller problems or solutions. Being able to look at large data sets and find key insights is a huge part of my job and having a math background makes that easy.
The advice I’d offer to current undergraduate students in mathematics: Don't underestimate the career opportunities that you have with a degree in math! Many employers will see the value in your problem solving abilities and help you learn any additional skills on the job.
In a typical day in my work, I: The main responsibility of my job is to ensure that we are building the right technologies for our customers in the right way. I analyze customer behavior through data and research to understand what features we should build next and why. Once I have a hypothesis on what we should build, I use data to tell the story and get buy-in from business teams. From there, I work closely with designers and software engineers on technical architecture of new features. My day to day can vary widely depending on where we are in a project - anywhere from data analysis, software architecture planning, design feedback, to presenting slides to executives.
