The most helpful aspects of my undergraduate education in mathematics were: The overall problem solving process of organizing thoughts and deconstructing larger problems. In terms of topics, linear algebra is the most helpful. A very large part of my job is database construction and manipulation, and linear algebra is super helpful to think about this. Also very useful when using ML models & clustering algorithms.
The advice I’d offer to current undergraduate students in mathematics: Focus on industry topics that you like, because you will work harder and have more fun. Keep collaborating, as a better solution reached by the whole group. Keep making yourself uncomfortable with new subjects, tools, and approaches.
In a typical day in my work, I: build behavioral models around customer profitability to enable the finance organization to make more informed decisions.
