The most helpful aspects of my undergraduate education in mathematics were: The problem solving skills I gained as a mathematics major has proven to be helpful in every aspect of my career. The critical thinking skills and multiple approaches needed to be successful in mathematics translates very well to the real world. I have benefited greatly from my mathematics degree.
The advice I’d offer to current undergraduate students in mathematics: Your mathematics degree will provide you with more opportunities than you realize. Take the time to explore different roles. I started as a high school math teacher and then went into insurance risk management. I am able to use the skills I learned at Grand Valley to help keep our clients safe!
In a typical day in my work, I: I lead a team of 8 risk consultant in the Central U.S. We provide risk management services to our clients. This includes hazard recognition with recommended controls, safety meetings, evaluation of their operations and consultative support to help reduce their exposures.
Other thoughts/comments: I am thankful I belong to the the Grand Valley Mathematics community! I appreciate the opportunity to share my journey.
