Philip Pratt's Profile

Phil started at the College of Arts and Sciences in 1970. He taught a wide variety of courses in the Mathematics Department. As the department expanded its computer offerings, Phil did the same, gaining expertise in newly emerging computer technology. As part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, he was a leader in the development of new courses in computer science and began writing texts for a wide range of classes in this discipline, with a focus on databases. When the department of Mathematics and Computer Science split, Phil assumed the role of Chair of the new Department of Mathematics and Statistics, a position he held for eight years. When Phil stepped down from the chair position, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics split into the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics. So, Phil has the distinction of being the only person to chair the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at GVSU.

In 1989, Phil received recognition for his Distinguished Contribution to Higher Education from the Association of Governing Boards and Presidents of State Universities and Colleges of Michigan. This board was formed in 1957 to consider problems of higher education common to the membership. The group presented an annual award to distinguished faculty and outstanding students “in recognition of a treasured Michigan resource and the promise it represents for our states’ future.”

Outside of his academic work, Phil is a concert organist. He has produced several concert videos. You can find them by searching for Philip Pratt Organ Concert.
