Film Summary

In the 15th century, both France and England stake a blood claim for the French throne. Believing that God had chosen her, the young Joan leads the army of the King of France. When she is captured, the Church sends her for trial on charges of heresy. Refusing to accept the accusations, the graceful Joan of Arc will stay true to her mission.

Dr. James Smither received his PhD in history from Brown University, He is a specialist in European and military history and did a dissertation on the French Wars of Religion during the 16th century. Before coming to GVSU, he taught at the University of Connecticut and the University of Dayton, and spent a year teaching English in a French high school. His current research focuses on military history, and he directs the GVSU Veterans History Project, which records and archives oral history interviews with military veterans and others with stories to tell relating to the American experience in wartime, including women professional baseball players, Vietnamese refugees, and people who lived in Europe during World War II, one of whom served in the French resistance.
