Film Summary

Director Henri-Georges Clouzot peers into the imagination of Pablo Picasso's studio and emerges with a quiet documentary that captures the revolutionary painter's creative process. Through a combination of stop-motion and time-lapse photography, Picasso's Cubist work comes to life on screen. Paint strokes and splashes of color appear as if by magic, as empty canvases become platforms for a series of daring and original drawings and paintings that exist only within the confines of this film.

Maureen Nollette was born and raised in Omaha, NE. Trained as a designer and painter, Nollette earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Nebraska in 1986 and a BFA from Kansas City Arts Institute in 1991. She received her MFA in Studio Arts from Queens College in 1995. 

Through her work, Nollette examines gender inequality and unjust social constructs in a broad sense. Her practice is informed by overlooked and undervalued labor performed by women, often labeled women’s work. She explores this arena by engaging in labor-intensive stitching, pinning, and painting, employing materials traditionally linked to craft. Through process and placement, Nollette disrupts and mends falsely constructed labels and value assumptions.

Nollette’s work has been included in exhibitions in Beijing, China; New York, NY; Detroit, MI; New Haven, CT; Atlanta, GA; and Brooklyn, NY to name a few. Her work is in prominent private and public collections including, Detroit Institute of the Arts (Detroit, MI); Yves St. Laurent (New York, NY); MGM Mirage Hotel (Las Vegas, NV); j. jill Group (Tilton, NH).

Nollette is currently a visiting faculty member in the Department of Visual & Media Arts at Grand Valley State University.
