Jim Scott received the Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame 2017. His accomplishments include:

- Grand Rapids Northview High School assistant football and track coach (1967-69)
- Northview High School science and physical education Instructor (1967-69)
- Grand Valley State University Associate Professor, Movement Science, Honors College Faculty (1969-present)
- Pew Teaching Excellence Nominee, Department of Physical Education (2001)
- 35 year Service Award, Grand Valley State University (2004)
- Honors College Faculty Fellow, Grand Valley State University (2002-present)
Dr. Jim Scott: GVSU coaching career
- Grand Valley State University head wrestling coach (1968-91)
- 141-9 record at GVSU
- Seven-time Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year
- National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics wrestling Coach of the Year (1977)
- Coached 55 All-American wrestlers and eight national champions in NAIA and NCAA Division II
- Three Division I NCAA All-Americans (Michael Abrams-167 pounds, Roger Singleton-118, Ron Essink - heavyweight)
- Seven-time GLIAC Team Champion
- Grand Valley State University Athletic Hall of Fame inductee (1996)
- Michigan Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee (1992)
- Director of Olympic Trials, USA Wrestling at GVSU (June 1984)
- Consultant (academic/volunteer) for NCAA, MHSAA, National Wrestling Coaches Association and USA Wrestling

- Team Leader of USA Wrestling World Team Russia, Georgia, and Uzbekistan (1996)
- Coach of Collegiate All-Star team to Japan & Korea (1977)
