Informational Meeting for Oboe Students Interested in GVSU Music Programs: Tuesday, March 5 (HCPA 1207)
Are you interested in continuing music in college but are unsure which program is right for you? Dr. Vavrikova will meet with high school oboists who are looking for opportunities to participate in school ensembles or continue their studies as music majors or minors in college. If you are interested in attending this meeting, please register by Friday, March 1. We will send you directions to campus with suggested places to park.
Dr. Marlen Vavříková is Professor of Music at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. She was also Visiting Professor at the University of Ostrava (2022) and Visiting Instructor of Oboe at the Interlochen Arts Academy (2017). During summers she teaches at the bi-annual Ostrava Oboe Master Classes. Her playing was praised as “beautiful throughout, with a sensitive and lyrical touch, sure technique and intonation, and a range of dynamics unusually wide for oboists.” (Fanfare) The compact disc “Petr Eben: Chamber Music for Oboe” was recognized as “one of the most important issues there has ever been of Eben’s music.” (Dvořák Society) Dr. Vavříková earned an Artist Diploma from the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava where she studied with Gabriel Sýkora and Josef Židek, a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Professor Richard Killmer, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana where she studied with professors Nancy Ambrose King and Dan Stolper.
