Dolní Vítkovice
A unique place where the old city history morphed into new industrial architecture has been hosting educational and cultural events in several halls and exhibitions spaces. At the top of the Bolt Tower, you can enjoy a cup of delicious coffee and select from several tempting deserts.
Statue of Leoš Janáček
A statue of Leoš Janáček is hidden on a small square (Jiráskovo náměstí), situated right next to the main square (Masarzkovo náměstí). While Janáček did not spend much time in Ostrava, he passed away at a city hospital on August 12, 1928. Both the orchestra and the music conservatory were named after him (Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava and the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava).
The Cunning Little Vixen
Hukvaldy, a small town about 30 minutes south of Ostrava, is where Leoš Janáček was born and where he spent the first ten years of his live. This charming place inspired his opera The Cunning Little Vixen. Here is a beautiful recording of the orchestral suite.
Leoš Janáček's House and Museum
Janáček moved to this house in 1910, with his wife Zdenka. THere he wrote his late works, including operas The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, Káťa Kabanová, The Cunning Little Vixen, The Makropulos Affair and From the House of the Dead, as well as Taras Bulba, Sinfonietta, and Glagolitic Mass. The museum houses Janáček's old piano as a part of an exhibition which reconstructing his study room.
