This course provides students with a foundational understanding of the basic knowledge and skills required for an exercise specialist. This includes pre-exercise screening, components of exercise programs for fitness and weight management, and exposure to basic exercise assessment tools, emergency procedures, and the legal aspects of working as a professional. The course will cover the steps of evidence-based practice: composing evidence-based questions, searching for evidence, systematically reading the evidence, and critically evaluating the evidence related to that topic. Students will gain experience consuming and interpreting research related to exercise and health/wellness topics. Offered fall and winter semesters. Prerequisite: STA 215.
Winter 2025 - Hybrid Spring/Summer 2025 - Online
This course teaches students to develop, administer, participate in, and evaluate different exercise programs and leadership styles in various exercise settings. Students will also learn appropriate motivational strategies to help coach clients. Offered every semester. Prerequisites: EXS 195
Spring/Summer 2025 - Hybrid
Provides students the fundamental background for health and fitness assessment commonly used in fitness and clinical settings. Topics include epidemiology, cardiovascular assessment, strength assessment, weight control, body composition assessment, and exercise prescription. Prerequisite: MOV 304. Corequisite: EXS 321 or EXS 322.
Winter 2025 - Online Spring/Summer 2025 - Online
Students will gain an understanding of the exercise science profession through at least one observational experience (90 hours total) at pre-approved sites, in-class discussions, and reflections on their observations. Students must complete health compliance requirements prior to enrolling and maintain requirements during fieldwork. Offered fall and winter semesters. Prerequisites: EXS 320 and EXS 321 with at least a B-.
Presents information related to exercise for special populations found in clinical and health/fitness settings. Physiological background, health assessment, exercise evaluation, and exercise prescription are studied. Special populations include those with cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, and musculoskeletal diseases. Prerequisites: EXS 320 and (EXS 321 or EXS 322).
This Capstone course is designed to enhance the professional awareness, professional literacy, and skills of the exercise science major. Students apply previous knowledge using oral, written, and computer literacy skills. Networking and involvement in professional organizations is stressed. Offered fall and winter semesters. Prerequisite: EXS 320, (EXS 321 or EXS 322) and senior standing.
