Biography:
I am the Web Services Librarian in the Libraries, which has me overseeing all of our web-base systems. My background is in human/computer interaction and philosophy, and I work on designing easy-to-use interfaces, making sure our web content is accessible, and examining search tools for bias.
I was a co-founder and former Editor-in-Chief of Weave: Journal of Library User Experience, a peer-reviewed, open access journal for Library User Experience professionals. I am also the author of Responsive Web Design for Libraries published by ALA TechSource, Customizing Vendor Systems for Better User Experiences from Libraries Unlimited, and the Masked by Trust: Bias in library discovery from Library Juice Press. I have spoken about design ethics, user experience, and usability around the world. Library Journal named me a “Mover and Shaker” in 2013, which led to many unfortunate dance-related jokes in the Reidsma household.
Summer 2025 Opportunity:
This year, we have an opportunity for a scholar to work with our Web Services Librarian on building a framework and syllabus for teaching students the basics of examining search algorithms for bias as part of an information literacy curriculum. If you are interested in this project, please indicate so in the letter of interest in your application!
