Salam Recipient of GV in DC Scholarship
June 22, 2021
The first ever recipient of the GV in DC Endowed Scholarship is Shireen Salam. Shireen is a double major in International Relations and Criminal Justice who is interning this summer with the Enabling Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC) in Washington, DC. EPIC is dedicated to educating the American public about the needs of the people in Iraq and facilitating humanitarian assistance in the country. As part of her internship duties, Shireen works with her colleagues to gather data and situational updates from Iraq-based news sources. They then use this information to compile weekly reports on the political, security, economic, and humanitarian conditions on the ground for interested parties such as activists, researchers, and analysts.
Shireen is interning and studying in DC as part of the Washington Center’s Summer Academic Internship Program. For over 45 years the Washington Center has been providing internships in the nation’s capital for tens of thousands of college students. Grand Valley students have been participating in the Washington Center program since 2008.
The GV in DC Endowed Scholarship was established through a partnership among the GVSU Alumni Club of Washington D.C. and faculty and friends of the GVSU Political Science Department. Scholarship funds generated by the endowment are dedicated to help GVSU students intern in DC as part of their academic and professional development. The Political Science faculty and the DC Alumni Club thank the many alumni and friends who donated to the endowment thus far. Please go here if you would like to donate
