Poll Workers Needed! Campus Compact Launches Effort to Staff Polling Places

Campus Compact, a non-partisan membership organization of colleges and universities, is recruiting students to serve as poll workers this fall. Potential shortages of poll workers due to concerns among older people about COVID-19 are showing up all over the country, given that most poll workers are typically over the age of 60. Without an increase in workers, in-person polling places will be under-staffed or may have to be closed. Power the Polls is Campus Compact’s initiative to recruit lower-risk workers that can staff in-person voting locations.

In Michigan, election workers are paid both for their time on Election Day and for the required training. Poll workers must be at least 18 years or older and registered to vote in the State of Michigan. They cannot be a candidate or immediate family member of a candidate, an election challenger, or a member of the local Board of Canvassers. Election workers will need to adhere to strict public health guidelines, including social-distancing, sanitizing, and maintaining strong hygiene to protect themselves and others from coronavirus.

If you are interested in working as a poll worker, you can get more details at Power the Polls website or at the Michigan Secretary of State website. Sign up today!
