Background –

Rehabilitation Counselors work with clients to maximize the client’s independence and employability. Generally, someone referred for rehabilitation counseling is coping with personal, social or vocational difficulties that result from illness, disease or stress of daily life. As a counselor you would coordinate care at a treatment facility, assess the needs of the client and implement programs that address personal and vocational goals of the client.

What additional education is required to become a Rehabilitation Counselors?

  1. Michigan requires that rehab counselors are LPCs
  2. Master’s programs that hold approved accreditation are recognized as license qualifying in the state (e.g., Rehabilitation Counseling programs)
  3. Internship that is no less than 600 hours
  4. Supervised Practice Requirement – those without a Master’s you must work under someone for 2 years and 3,000 hours

What skills are applicable to this field of work? Active listening, social perceptiveness, monitoring, speaking, critical thinking, oral comprehension & expression and written communication are skills that are important for Rehabilitation Counselors.

Employer Possibilities –Generally work in community and vocational rehabilitation facilities, individual’s homes, state or local governmental agencies, and nursing facilities.
