Dr. Deborah Herrington

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Deborah Herrington has been named as the new CLAS Center for Experiential Learning Director. In her new position, she will lead the work of the Regional Math and Science Center and CCEL. Debbie is a professor and the former chair of the Chemistry Department at GVSU.

In her 21 years at GVSU, she developed the award-winning Target Inquiry professional development program for middle and high school science teachers. She also led curriculum efforts to revise and align the general chemistry course sequence and provide a parachute option for students who enter first semester general chemistry. Her current research involves the use of technology to effectively support student learning and promote effective student self-assessment in general chemistry.

She has published more than 30 peer reviewed papers in science education research; received over $5 million dollars in funding to support research to improve the teaching and learning of science; given a number of invited talks, including one to the National Academies of Sciences; and is the recipient of several awards including the GVSU Glenn A. Niemeyer Award for Outstanding Faculty and the Michigan Association of State Universities Distinguished Professor of the Year Award. Congratulations Dr. Herrington!

The Regional Math and Science Center is an education outreach center within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Center for Experiential Learning (CCEL) at GVSU. By partnering with GVSU faculty and students, the RMSC is able to engage K-12, higher education and community stakeholders to advance STEM in the West Michigan region.

The RMSC facilitates learning opportunities, professional development, summer camps, and conferences, while also connecting GVSU faculty and students with high quality classrooms and high impact experiences. The RMSC has been at GVSU since the late 1980s.
