Acoustics- Sounds Like Fun!

How is sound created, and how does it travel? What are the important characteristics of sound, and how do sounds interact with one another? How can sound be visualized, and how does the sound of a human voice compare to other sounds? This drop-in, open-ended workshop includes hands-on activities for all ages exploring each of these questions and more.    

Dr. Karen Gipson and Dr. Keith Oliver are both professors in the Physics Department at Grand Valley State University, and both are passionate about acoustics (the study of sound). Dr. Gipson’s research specialty is physical acoustics, and she has done several musical acoustics projects with GVSU students. Dr. Oliver’s specialty is physics education research (PER), and he often works with physics students on PER projects studying student misconceptions. Dr. Oliver also coordinates GVSU’s Integrated Science program, working with pre-service teachers for grades K -12. Dr. Oliver also coordinates GVSU’s Integrated Science program, working with pre-service teachers for  grades 6 -12. Both Dr. Gipson and Dr. Oliver have a passion for K12 outreach and have visited numerous schools in the greater Grand Rapids area.
