To boldly go where no woman has gone before
Dr. Jeannette Ridlon Piccard was the first woman to fly into the stratosphere, piloting a balloon expedition in search of cosmic rays in 1934. She was a chemist who successfully went and returned, where no woman had gone before. We’ll learn about the history of her expedition, her work with NASA and about some of the research I've done on molecules found in the stratosphere and beyond.
Michelle M. Francl, Ph.D. is the Frank B. Mallory Professor of Chemistry at Bryn Mawr College, where she has been on the faculty since 1986, and an Adjunct Scholar of the Vatican Observatory. She is a quantum chemist who has published in areas ranging from the development of methods for computational chemistry to the structures of topologically intriguing molecules. Prof. Francl is also a writer whose essays on science, culture and policy appear regularly in Nature Chemistry and other venues.
