Ben Champion, Executive MBA graduate from the Seidman College of Business
What were your professional goals and motivation for pursuing your MBA at the Seidman College of Business?
Before starting my journey with GVSU, I was given more and more opportunities in front of senior leadership. While great for my current role, I realized that my current skill set needed a few tools to take my career to the next level.
Did your Seidman MBA change how you approach business and if so, how?
The Seidman EMBA program pushes you to challenge assumptions, think cross-functionally, and pushes you to think big picture.
How was your Seidman MBA helpful to you in advancing your career?
One of the key ways in which the Seidman MBA has been helpful to me is by enhancing my strategic thinking abilities. The program provided a holistic view of various business functions, including finance, marketing, operations, and leadership. This multidisciplinary approach allowed me to develop a deep understanding of how these areas intersect and impact organizational success. Armed with this knowledge, I have been able to make more informed and strategic decisions in my role, considering the broader implications on the company's objectives and bottom line.
How did your Seidman MBA shape your leadership style?
My communication and decision-making style is empathetic and inclusive. I try to understand how my changes impact our internal stakeholders and customers.
What content or skills did you learn in the EMBA program that you regularly use today?
The most important thing I learned was how to win people over—grasping the significance of others' needs and priorities, and empowering them to succeed, is immensely fulfilling.
What was the most rewarding part of the Seidman EMBA program?
Undoubtedly, my classmates were the highlight of the program. The commitment of dedicating 16 hours on alternate Fridays and Saturdays to this program truly becomes rewarding when you have extraordinary individuals accompanying you.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a Seidman MBA?
Don’t force it. Have a why. You get out of the program what you put into it.
