Hollie Blagg, MBA '19
Hollie Blagg, Executive MBA graduate from the Seidman College of Business
What were your professional goals and motivation for pursuing your MBA at the Seidman College of Business?
I enjoy serving and leading organizations when they are in the midst of transformation. My MBA allowed me to learn about various organizational disciplines and provide me a base knowledge to understand impacts across organizations.
Did your Seidman MBA change how you approach business and if so, how?
Yes, the broad awareness has allowed me to consider changes and impact to the organization and look at them from various angles. This has allowed me to proactively identify opportunities and risks for the organization in areas that I historically had no hands-on experience but understood the motivations and goals to incorporate in decision making and strategy development.
How did your Seidman MBA shape your leadership style?
In general, there was a great sense of humility learned through the program. Understanding that there are many different areas of business, experiences, and motivations that must be considered in leading. The program changed my perspective entirely. The desire to lean in with a sense of curiosity, desire to continuously learn, but most importantly how genuinely listening and seeking to understand your people is the foundation and grounding required to lead them effectively into a new future.
What content or skills did you learn in the EMBA program that you regularly use today?
The most important skill has been challenging the status quo. The EMBA program challenged us as leaders to be prepared for a continuously changing future that requires problem solving and leadership to keep up with constant evolution in business. The professors challenged us continuously to look at problems differently and dig deep to come up with innovative solutions.
What was the most rewarding part of the Seidman EMBA program?
The most rewarding part of the EMBA program was the professors in the program. The teachers there were unbelievable. All experienced in their taught professions, in which they could bring the real-life examples combined with theory to challenge us to think critically every day.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a Seidman MBA?
It will be a transformative experience, so lean into the outcome of learning versus focusing on the grade. Each day you have the opportunity to learn something new that you can apply in your everyday professional experience. Practice those learnings actively, provide feedback, and adjust. Genuinely immerse yourself in the experience and remember the outcome isn’t the degree but what the material will bring to opening your awareness and understanding to new possibilities.
