Since we’re spending a lot of time indoors this semester, chances are you and your roommate(s) have been seeing a lot of each other lately. Starting to grind each other’s gears? Use these tips to maintain healthy and comfortable relationships in your own home.
#1. Make Time for Yourself
It’s wonderful when your roommate is your best friend, but sometimes you simply need to coexist. Let them know when you need some space and take some time for yourself to unwind for a bit. In a small living space, setting boundaries is key.
#2. Communicate Clearly
Sometimes communicating solely via text can lead to misunderstandings. Try to set aside time for an in-person meeting where you can be open about things that might be on your mind. It’s important not to let little problems snowball into big ones. Make sure you’re patient, and always be willing to listen.
#3. Plan a Variety of Activities
Do you have trouble agreeing on what to do? Do you have conflicting interests? Work to compromise and try a variety of different things together. Maybe one day you’ll go on an outdoor hiking adventure together, and the next day you’ll just stay home and watch a movie or do homework. Be honest with each other, and never try to force your roommate(s) to do something they don’t want to do.
#4. Get Them Dinner
Ah, food. It’s the ever-powerful force of good that has been strengthening and repairing relationships for centuries. Maybe you want to set up a rotation where you and your roommates will cook for each other. Or if you’re really not much of a chef, order a pizza sometime and have a cozy night in. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive for your roomies to appreciate the gesture!
College can be stressful, and managing class, work, and roommate conflicts simultaneously is often overwhelming. Don’t let yourself get sick of your roommate, and don’t let them get sick of you!
