Choosing a major is sometimes an intimidating part of heading to college, and with 94 undergraduate degrees offered at Grand Valley, it can be difficult to decide what field you want to go into. However, GV has many resources to help you discover what you’re passionate about! Here are four steps you can take to help you decide on a major at GVSU.
Step One: Knock Out Those Gen Eds
It can be daunting to try to figure out your path in life, but fortunately, you don’t have to declare a major right away! It’s okay to be undecided. When trying to figure out what you want to spend your time studying, ticking those general education classes off your to-do list can actually lead you to the right path. Keep a mental list of the classes that held your interest the most and carry on to the next step!
Step Two: Talk to an Advisor
One of the best people on campus to talk to when figuring out a major is an advisor! They’re the experts on all things major-related, so schedule an appointment with an academic advisor and let them answer all of your questions. You can discuss major requirements, classes, scheduling, and anything else that will be helpful to your search for the perfect major.
Step Three: Join an Affiliated Organization
GVSU has a variety of academic student organizations, and you’re bound to find one related to a major you’re considering. These student orgs will allow you to meet other students pursuing a major you’re interested in and learn more about what the field has to offer. Head to LakerLink to find all the info you need about organizations on campus.
Step Four: Attend Majors Fair
GV has many resources and programs that can help you on your path to success, and one event you won’t want to miss is the Majors Fair! On Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Kirkhof’s Grand River Room, alumni and faculty will be available to meet with students to give you an idea of the majors and career paths. This is the perfect opportunity for you to ask more questions, learn about new programs, and get some advice.
Looking for more information about the Majors Fair? All the info you need can be found on the Majors Fair webpage. Be sure to utilize the many resources GV has to help you find the perfect major!
