Outcome A Foundations and Skills for Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning is all purposeful learning activity, undertaken on an ongoing basis with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competence." An endeavor of higher education is to prepare students to be this type of learner by developing specific dispositions and skills while in school. Students will: Learn how to find, evaluate, and use resources to explore a topic in depth.Explore a topic in depth, yielding a rich awareness and/or little-known information indicating intense interest in the subject.Complete required work, generates and pursues opportunities to expand knowledge, skills, and abilities.Look beyond requirements, and show interest in pursuing knowledge independently.Make references to previous learning and attempts to apply that knowledge and those skills to demonstrate comprehension and performance in novel situations.Review prior learning with some depth, revealing slightly clarified meanings or indicating a somewhat broader perspectives about educational or life events.
Objective 1 FQA participants will gain skills and strategies to successfully navigate their first year at GVSU. FQA students will engage in shared learning and peer-to-peer education about university resources and how to successfully navigate the transition from high school to college. Upper class student leaders will facilitate discussions, share their experiences, and help participants troubleshoot and find on-campus and community resources. FQA students will also have the opportunity to learn from several guest facilitators, including current students, staff, and alumni.

Outcome B Critical Thinking (undergraduate)

Use systematic reasoning to examine and evaluate information and ideas and then synthesize conclusions to propose new perspectives and solutions.

The General Education objectives associated with this Outcome are listed below. You can use these objectives as is or modify them in the next step in GVAssess.

Students will:
• Assess relevant information, perspectives and assumptions.
• Construct logical conclusions based on reason and evidence.
• Formulate novel approaches or create innovative interpretations.
• Evaluate the novel approaches or innovative interpretations..
Objective 2 FQA participants will develop an understanding of how to use an intersectional lens to analyze complex social issues and identities. Students in FQA will engage in peer-led discussion and shared learning about intersectionality in the context of complex social topics and community issues. FQA facilitators will develop and implement co-curricular content to help participants understand where the idea of intersectionality comes from and and how to use an intersectional lens to think deeply about issues of power, privilege, and oppression.

Outcome C Intercultural Knowledge and Competence (undergraduate)

Intercultural Knowledge and Competence is "a set of cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills and characteristics that support effective and appropriate interaction in a variety of cultural contexts.”

Students will:
• Develop knowledge and understanding of diverse perspectives, global awareness, or other cultures.
• Recognize new perspectives about own cultural rules and biases.
• Demonstrate understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices.
• Interpret intercultural experience from the perspectives of own and more than one worldview and demonstrates ability to act in a supportive manner that recognizes the feelings of another cultural group.
• Articulate understanding of cultural differences in verbal and nonverbal communication (e.g., demonstrates understanding of the degree to which people use physical contact and is able to negotiate a shared understanding based on those differences).
• Ask questions about other cultures and seeks out answers to these questions that reflect multiple cultural perspectives.
• Initiate and develop interactions with culturally different others. Begins to suspend judgment in valuing their interactions with culturally different others.
Objective 3 Participants of Queer & Trans 101: A Training for Allies will gain an understanding of the basic concepts surrounding gender, sex, and sexual orientation. Students will participate in an interactive, two-hour presentation delivered by LGBT Resource Center staff. The presentation establishes real-life context and clear reference points for terminology and concepts related to the LGBTQIA+ community.
