2023/24 Cost Breakdown for Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) (Business Track)

This is the estimated budget for this study abroad program. It serves as an estimated cost of attendance for your semester or year abroad. Students often pay for study abroad through a combination of financial aid, personal funds, scholarships, grants, and alternative loans. The total amount listed as the Total Program Cost is the maximum amount of financial aid that can be awarded to you by GVSU. This total program cost does not reflect the amount of aid you will qualify for, rather, it serves as the cap on what can be awarded.

Paid to Grand Valley State University Student Accounts by the regular tuition payment deadline.

IS 380 Course Fee

Paid to GVSU. The course fee for IS 380 is $28 per credit hour. Participants on this program will register for 12 credits of IS 380.

Chubb Health Insurance

The Chubb health insurance plan is mandatory for all study abroad students. The cost is $1.91 per day. This estimate reflects 130 days, but the actual number of days of the program may differ.

Passport fee: $200. Visa fee is currently around $69. Plus, students will pay around 160 CHF  for a residence permit once they arrive.

Meals

Meals are based on an average of 525 - 625 Swiss Francs ($550-675 USD) per month. The Winter semester estimate is based on 4.5 months.

Health Insurance

Students are required to have health insurance coverage that meets ZHAW's requirements. Students may seek approval for the Chubb plan offered through GVSU, but it is up to ZHAW to approve this option. Students who do not have coverage will be required to purchase insurance through ZHAW. The cost is 150 CHF per month. 

Housing

$6,525-$8,000 (Winter semester)

Housing costs are based on 700-850 Swiss Francs per month. Students will also have to pay a deposit that is typically equal to three months rent. This cost estimate includes: deposit, administrative fee, and rent for 6 months. NOTE: Reserve a place in housing early. In most cases, you will not pay a deposit until later, but it gets your name on a reservation list. Students are given placements on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students are typically expected to sign a 6 month contract and pay for 6 months of housing even if you do not play to occupy your apartment after the end of classes.

On-site personal expenses associated with local transportation, laundry, trash cell phone purchase, and basic necessities. The estimate ranges from $400-$600 per month. Based on information provided by ZHAW for average living expenses.

$25,956 (estimated cost for out-of-state students who do not receive the tuition differential scholarship)

Out-of-state students who receive a GVSU tuition differential scholarship will be able to use that scholarship towards the cost of this program. Exception: International students will not have access to the tuition differential scholarship for use towards the cost of study abroad, however, they may still be eligible for the Study Abroad Grant.

Estimated costs are based on a rate of exchange of 1 CHF = 1.1 USD. Exchange rates fluctuate and may impact the estimates listed above. The rate listed here is the rate as of June 2023.

 

 

*Based on in-state, upper-division tuition rates for 12-15 credits. If you complete more than 15 GVSU credits during your semester abroad, tuition charges for the additional credit above 15 will be billed to your GVSU student account after you return and PIC completes the transfer of credit.

**The cost of any study abroad program depends to a large extent on the participant’s personal spending habits and lifestyle. Personal travel, entertainment, gifts, souvenirs, and other types of personal spending are costs not reflected in the above estimates.
