Multimedia Artist Christine Shallenberg to visit GVSU

The Department of Visual and Media Arts is proud to host Christine Shallenberg as a Visiting Artist for an artist lecture and Q&A on Wednesday, April 4th, 2018, 5:00 p.m., Room 94 Kirkhof Center.
Christine Shallenberg is a multimedia artist whose work ranges in scale from performative physical encounters to mediated light and sound installations to participatory choreography for audience. Her collaborative project with Jenn Cooper, JCSpaceRadio, creates opportunities for audience engagement with vibration and resonance in Frequency Workouts and Sonic Labs. Last summer they travelled to west Nebraska and presented their work during the total solar eclipse. They are currently building interactive radio robots designed to engage with the public and their ideas surrounding presence. Christine received an artist residency through Links Hall, Chicago, during which she pursued research into the physical, spiritual, electrical and historical aspects of grounding. She has also recently shown laser cut figures generated by digitally tracing the movements of her dancing body with an infrared camera as part of a daily improvisational practice and a series of live performance and video works exploring the themes of sexuality and desire in the digital age. Christine has been nominated for a Bessie (NY Dance and Performance Award) in visual design for David Neumann’s Restless Eye, for which she designed a system for scanning and translating the performers’ EEG brain waves into large-scale lighting shifts for the entire performance space. She also worked as the Lighting Designer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for whom she designed Second Hand, Antic Meet, Nearly 902 and more than 30 unique Event performances seen around the world.
