Visiting Artists Lecture Series Announced
September 23, 2016
Every year the Department of Art and Design brings nationally and internationally known artists, designers and critics to campus for public lectures. A fundamental piece in the visual arts education, the visiting speakers frequently conduct small group critiques of student work, practicum workshops, and roundtable discussions during their visits. This diversity allows students to learn from professionals practicing in a variety of media.
This year, the Visiting Artists Committee at the Department has outdone itself. The committee programmed a series of presenters around a single curatorial theme, ART AND THE RADICAL , which will also serve as the series title.
"ART AND THE RADICAL features creative workers whose projects deepen our understanding of the world by revealing alternate histories, highlighting marginalized communities, and challenging widely held beliefs and traditions."
Four speakers have been scheduled for this year's series, which kicks off this October 3rd, at 4:30 p.m., at Lake Huron Hall, with a lecture by artist, educator, writer, and radical community arts organizer Jen DeLos Reyes. DeLos Reyes is the director and founder of "Open Engagement,” an annual international conference on socially engaged art that explores and supports the work of transdisciplinary artists, activists, students, scholars, community members, and organizations.
The lecture series roster has been announced. Winter semester dates will be announced soon.
FALL 2016
- Jen Delos Reyes - Monday, Oct. 3
- Nicolas Lampert - Monday, November 7
WINTER 2017 roster (dates TBD)

"These presentations (from some of the most inspiring leaders in our field) are rare opportunities for our students to see exciting ways in which their visual arts education is being made manifest in the world", said Brett Colley, Associate Professor of Drawing, Printmaking and Foundations.
In addition to that, the committee is working to schedule all lectures at the same time: always on Mondays, 4:30 p.m., in the room 132 Lake Huron Hall, in the Allendale Campus. Everyone is welcome to attend this lecture series and, with that, continue to maintain the vibrant culture around the Visiting Artists Program at GVSU.
