Jewelry and Metals Student designs commemorative pins for former Women governors

Emma Hoekstra, BFA student in Jewelry and Metalsmithing and senior student in the Department of Visual and Media Arts continues to make strides towards becoming a successful jewelry maker and metalsmith. After a study abroad experience in Italy and working closely with successful professionals in West Michigan, Hoekstra was the student selected to design and craft twelve commemorative pins for 12 U.S. Women Governors, including former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.
Sponsored by the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies in partnership with the National Governors Association at Grand Valley State University, the U.S. Women Governors conference, is the first gathering of U.S. Women Governors and other scholars and leaders to discuss leadership, common ground, and gender-relevant issues. Each attending governor was presented with one of Hoekstra's pieces. Their structural simplicity is intended to "represent how effective leaders bring people together by establishing a vision, communicating a strategy and motivating individuals to work together to achieve a common goal"
After graduation, Hoekstra would like to own her own business and create opportunities for people younger than her to pursue their jewelry and metals dreams.
