Recently graduated Master's student Jasmine Mancuso wins award from GVSU for outstanding publication
March 31, 2021
Jasmine Mancuso, who graduated from GVSU in 2020 with her Master's in Biology-Aquatic Science, recently received the GVSU Graduate Dean's Citation award for Outstanding Publication for the Winter 2021 semester. Her publication entitled "Bloom and bust: Historical trends of harmful algal blooms in Muskegon Lake, Michigan, a Great Lakes estuary" was recently accepted for publication in the Journal Freshwater Science.
In the study, she analyzed 14 years of monitoring data on the seasonal algal community and water quality conditions of Muskegon Lake, a recovering EPA Great Lakes area of concern due to algal blooms and excessive nutrient loading, among other issues. She found that algal blooms of cyanobacteria, mainly Microcystis, have decreased since 2004 in response to decreases in nutrient concentrations and changes in nutrient type in the surface waters. The story points to the recovery of Muskegon Lake as a continuing environmental restoration success story.
Jasmine's Outstanding Publication award, adds to her Graduate Dean's Citation award for Outstanding Master's Thesis in the Fall 2020 semester.
Congratulations Jasmine!
