Research Article on the Ecosystem Level Impacts of Hypoxia Published in the Journal Ecosystems

April 01, 2018

The article, currently published in the journal Ecosystems, documents the chemical, physical, and biological changes associated with bottom water hypoxia in Muskegon Lake, Michigan.  The lake routinely experiences hypoxia every year during thermal stratification, which leads to enhanced nutrient release from the sediments which may help fuel cyanobacterial blooms at the surface following mixing events, and decreased fish presence in bottom waters.
