AWRI Summer Student Interns
One of the joys of summer at AWRI is our student intern program. This summer, we welcome 9 student interns to the Institute. These students are funded by a variety of sources and work with different principal investigators.
Three interns are being funded through the R.B. Annis Foundation: Sarrah Adamy will be working with Sarah Hamsher; Leona Addie (not pictured) will be working with Charlyn Partridge; Mason Tolonen will be working with Rick Rediske.
Two interns are being funded through the AWRI Undergraduate Internship: Ian Stone will be working with Bopi Biddanda; Autumn Taylor will be working with Janet Vail.
One intern is being funded through the Herbert L. VanderMey Endowment: Monica Van Til will be working with Jim McNair.
Three interns will be working at AWRI this summer, funded through various research projects: Alex Florian (not pictured) will be working with Charlyn Partridge; Jane Johnston will be working with Al Steinman; Steve Smit will be working with Charlyn Partridge.
A special welcome to all of these bright, young researchers for their hard work and dedication, and a heartfelt thank you to our generous funders!
LMC Activities
Bopi Biddanda shared lake insights with visiting GVSU faculty connected with the Making Waves Initiative onboard the research vessel W. G. Jackson when they visited on May 1st.
Bopi Biddanda staffed a table showcasing the Muskegon Lake Observatory at the Frauenthal Theater in Muskegon on the occasion of the screening of the new documentary “Back from the Brink” on May 15th.
Rick Rediske was a panelist at a town hall meeting hosted by State Senator Winnie Brinks regarding PFAS in the Cascade area and at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport on May 16th.
Rick Rediske and his graduate student Molly Lane attended the International Joint Commission meeting in Ann Arbor on May 21st. The topic of the meeting was molecular source tracking and bacterial loading in the Great Lakes.
Al Steinman attended a meeting via phone of the technical committee of the Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership to discuss next steps on May 7th.
Al Steinman introduced the “Raising Water Awareness” performances at Loosemore Auditorium in Grand Rapids on May 13th. The afternoon performance was for students from the Grand Rapids Public Schools and the evening performance was open to the general public. Emily Kindervater ran the AV system.
Al Steinman was a member of a discussion panel following the preview of the film “Back from the Brink”, which was held at the Frauenthal Theater in Muskegon on May 15th. Bopi Biddanda, Carl Ruetz, and Janet Vail were also in attendance.
Janet Vail has been asked by EGLE (Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, formerly Department of Environmental Quality) to be on an advisory committee that will oversee the updating of two of the Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS) Units for educators.
Janet Vail participated in the annual Michigan Project WET Community Water festival held in Big Rapids on May 29th. Nestle Waters provided funding for the festival.

Rick Rediske and a citizen’s group he was part of were featured in an article in Science dated May 17, 2019. The article is about uncovering PFAS contamination in the Rockford area with U.S. implications.

AWRI was represented at the Midwest Ecology & Evolutionary Biology meeting held at Indiana State University from April 26th – 28th. Ben Giffin and Andrew Pyman, both graduate students working with Charlyn Partridge, attended and presented at the meeting:

Kevin Strychar and his graduate student Cassidy Gilmore attended the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean held in the Dominican Republic from May 20th – 24th. Kevin presented the work of one of his former graduate students, John Skutnik, who was unable to attend; Cassidy Gilmore presented a poster. Kevin was also a judge for both the oral and poster presentations.

Grants & Contracts
Al Steinman received $5,000 from the Frey Foundation to fund two performances of the “Raising Water Awareness” collaborative project.
Al Steinman and Carl Ruetz have a grant through West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC) for Ecological Monitoring of Muskegon Lake in the amount of $83,136.
