Michelle Calkins teaches first-year writing and enjoys working with students who will go on to enter a variety of majors and fields. She finds the most fulfillment in helping students expand how they think about writing and translate their learning in writing into skills for their majors and future careers. She earned her MFA in creative writing from Virginia Tech with an additional focus on feminist theory. Her poems have been published in Cimarron Review and Weave Magazine. Outside of teaching and writing, she likes to leave weeds in her garden to find out what they become.

In 2023, Michelle received The Burch, Jacobs & Moore Diversity Teaching Excellence Award at GVSU.
