WRT Major Bear River Writer's Conference Scholarship
The Bear River Writers’ Conference is five days of workshops,
readings, and independent writing time, working with award-winning
faculty. Workshops are available in fiction, poetry, and creative
nonfiction. Bear River and the WRT department partner to send two WRT
majors to the conference free of charge, with a scholarship that
includes tuition, room and board (value of $875). This is a rewarding
(and fun) opportunity to participate in the writing world beyond our
campus, learning alongside writers of different ages and experience
levels, from fellow students to recent grads to experienced published
writers to older adults pursuing something new.
The conference will be held this year August 28- September 1,
2025 (over Labor Day Weekend) at Camp Michigania near Petoskey.
Faculty include Tommye Blount, Jaswinder Bolina, Joy Castro, Desiree
Cooper, Eduardo Corral, francine j. harris, Thomas Lynch, Aisha
Sabatini Sloan, and more. You must be able to get to/from the
conference location on your own. See our bio for a link to the
conference website.
If you are interested, please provide a statement of
approximately 300-400 words about why you wish to go, and how you
think this experience will benefit you as a writer. Please also tell
us something about your experiences as a writer at GVSU so far. This
could include classes taken, achievements you’re proud of,
extracurricular activities you’ve been involved in, or whatever else
you’d like to share. Include your class standing (senior, junior,
sophomore, etc).
Submit your statements to Prof. Caitlin Horrocks at
horrockc@gvsu.edu by 11:59pm Thursday April 3. A group of WRT faculty
will review the applications and select scholarship recipients
