Religious Studies

The Religious Studies program at Grand Valley State University is unique in that it allows students to design a degree that suits their specific interests, talents, and career aspirations.

Program Offerings at Grand Valley

Students may choose a bachelor of arts (B.A.) or a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree. The major provides the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary studies and can reach across divisional lines to draw on the academic resources of the campus. It is appropriate as a major for students who wish to

  • bring deep understanding of issues of religion into public dialogue;
  • focus on particular religions through courses in a range of global traditions and interdisciplinary perspectives; and
  • explore religion and related phenomena academically to understand the roles religion plays in the human journey.

Coursework

Students will complete coursework in four component areas:

  • Core courses
  • Disciplinary approaches courses
  • Electives
  • Global perspectives courses

Career Options

Graduates work for a variety of entities, including:

Having a religious studies program and curriculum available at GVSU is a critical piece to becoming liberally educated. It will allow students to further their interest in religion based on social, cultural, and spiritual, knowledge, and will greatly enhance students' understanding of their personal development in this area.
