Autism Spectrum DisordersAutism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities defined by significant impairments in social interaction and communication and the presence of unusual behaviors and interests. Many people with ASDs may have different ways of learning, or reacting to the environment and people. The thinking and learning abilities of people with ASDs can vary from gifted to severely challenged. Early identification is crucial so a child can begin benefiting from an intensive educational program. ASDs occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and is four times more prevalent in boys than girls. Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, affecting an estimated 1 in 150 births (Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2007). Roughly translated, this means as many as 1.5 million Americans today are believed to have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism Society of America, 2007). Autism spectrum disorders affect each individual differently and at varying degrees so each person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder will be unique. Educational programming must be tailored to the individual student and include opportunities in multiple environments to ensure long term success in independence and socialization skills.
