What is your current position and what do you find exciting about it?

I am the manager of a proteomic-centered, mass spectrometry core at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids. I develop and optimize methods for protein identification and quantitation. The most exciting part of my career is the opportunity to work with passionate scientists on multiple projects across vastly different fields of research. Together we have formed a collaborative network that extends from MSU to GVSU and the greater Grand Rapids area.

How did your GVSU Chemistry/Biochemistry degree help you prepare for your position?

My time at GVSU allowed me to explore different aspects of chemistry, and eventually discover my passion for the more analytical/instrumental side of science. My undergraduate research work with Dr. Andrew Lantz exposed me to the analytical techniques that I would further refine in my graduate studies. The structure of GVSU chemistry courses teaches the skills necessary to craft strong publications and to communicate complex topics with scientists whose expertise differ from one’s own.
