Position Title: Visiting Faculty in Chemistry

Summary: 

The Chemistry Department at Grand Valley State University has an opening for a Visiting Faculty to teach lectures and labs in general chemistry. The position is full-time for one academic year (mid-August 2021 through the end of April 2022). Visiting faculty positions may be extended for two additional one-year appointments, depending on departmental need and faculty performance. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a graduate degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related discipline. Demonstrated ability or experience in teaching lectures and labs is especially desirable. Candidates should also have experience in or demonstrated understanding of social justice education or initiatives, or training in diversity and inclusion, and strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy. The Department values candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and an ability to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse population of colleagues and students. Mentoring by our 30 experienced tenure-track faculty is provided.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of visiting faculty include teaching lectures, discussions, and labs for introductory service courses in general chemistry. Other teaching duties may be assigned, depending on departmental need and the candidate’s qualifications. A typical teaching load is about 12 assigned teaching hours per semester.

The GVSU Department of Chemistry is committed to high quality undergraduate education, offering Bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as a concentration in Chemistry Education and a Green Chemistry Certificate. We currently have more than 50 full time faculty and staff and serve over 200 chemistry and biochemistry majors along with students from a number of other science majors. Position Title: Laboratory Instructional Coordinator - Chemistry

Summary: Organic Chemistry Laboratory Instructional Coordinator coordinates the laboratory instructors and curriculum for a specified set of lab courses (CHM 231, 241, and 242) and will teach approximately 6-9 hours of these lab courses per week and hold 2-5 office hours, preferably with some in the Chemistry Success Center, during the academic year.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • B.S. in Chemistry or related science field with chemical lab experience. Previous experience in lab safety and development with supervisory experience is beneficial.
  • Commitment to and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate chemistry education.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.
  • Experience teaching in a higher education chemistry lab.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety.
  • Experience with instrumentation software and computing systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working and problem solving with a minimum of supervision.
  • Experience in or demonstrated understanding of social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

Preferred Qualifications and Education: 

  • Masters in Chemistry
  • Ability to prepare information for reports (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker, Blackboard).
  • Experience in popular video editing and communication software/apps.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in the organic teaching laboratory setting.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and transport gas cylinders and Dewars using appropriate dollies.

Responsibilities:

  • This is an academic year position, with the expectation that the OCLIC will be on campus on average 40 hours per week during the academic year.
  • Absences and vacations are approved by the Chemistry Department Chair.
  • Coordinating and teaching the 200 level organic lab sections.
  • Assisting/orienting new laboratory instructors.

Salary: $46,800-55,089.
