Students in a nursing lab

Grand Valley State University has partnered with McLaren Health Care and Spectrum Health to transform the nursing workforce by targeting the need to increase nursing education opportunities for nurses from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented minorities.

This program provides financial support for qualified students from McLaren and Spectrum, who gain admission into select GVSU Kirkhof College of Nursing (KCON) programs. Graduates will be able to deliver culturally aligned care and leadership in providing care for medically underserved areas and populations.

Spectrum and McLaren nurses will be selected for the following degree programs. Each program is 5 semesters long with applied learning experiences within their organizations.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) to BSN program (online format) - next cohort Fall 2023 (August)
    • Build on your nursing associate’s degree and start your BSN coursework in the fall 2023 semester.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) - (online format) - next cohort Fall 2023 (August)
    • Build on your nursing bachelor's degree and start MSN coursework in the fall 2023 semester.
    • MSN Specialties include:
      • Informatics
      • Palliative and Hospice Care
      • Clinical Nurse Leader
      • Leadership

Admitted McLaren and Spectrum* nurses will be individually responsible for approximately 20% of their tuition and program fees. The remainder of the program cost will be funded by GVSU, McLaren/Spectrum, and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

*Spectrum Health funding will be provided via the tuition assistance program. Team members must be in a benefit-eligible status to qualify for tuition assistance.
