Description

The Advertising and Public Relations Major in the School of Communications is bringing Mike Rios to Allendale to speak on Design Thinking.  Mike is a rockstar GVSU alum. Worldwide speaker and acclaimed social innovator at promoting good causes.

Formerly a creative adman, Mike grew up working with clients such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Porsche, and United Colors of Benetton. After selling a few too many beers, cigarettes, and products he didn't believe in, Mike started 17 Triggers in 2010. Awarded as an Unreasonable Venture in 2013, 17 Triggers is a Social Innovation Lab that works only for good causes, helping governments, nonprofits, NGOs, and social enterprises create even greater impact. With projects in 15 countries and counting, they have worked on everything ranging from redesigning newborn care services to improving early childhood education programs. Their past clients include UNICEF Global, iDE, DAI, ILO, World Bank, ADB, EarthSpark, World Vision, WSUP, and Plan International.

In addition to 17 Triggers, Mike is a TEDx-er, faculty at the Rainer Fellows program, and GVSU Honors College alumnus. Originally from Grand Rapids, he lives in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with his wife who has a bigger heart than he does.

Mike was sitting right you are a few years ago, working on his Advertising/PR major, eating the same lame, late at night pizza, cramming for exams, etc. But he didn’t sit still very long. He took advantage of opportunities. Learning photography and film/video editing on his own, freelancing jobs to pay for his tuition, 5 advertising internships in Grand Rapids and London, GR TV, The Polishing Center, Student Senate and he hasn’t slowed down since.
