Weekly Appointments

Sometimes writers need more specific help than what can happen during one of our staple services. The Writing Center, therefore, offers some unique services for these communities, such as the ability to schedule a standing Weekly Appointment.

What is it?

The weekly appointment allows for students to get consistent, dedicated, predictable support from the same consultant for a 50-minute session every week. These relationships guarantee face-to-face time with a consultant who can build upon conversations, lessons, and support from week to week. Typical reasons for getting weekly appointments include:

  • Slower pacing for typical session content
  • More time for instructional support
  • Dedicated support from the same person
  • Professor recommendation
  • Consultant recommendation

Who is it for?

The weekly appointment is reserved for dedicated students, who feel they identify with the following:

  • Students who may need or want additional language support
  • Disability support needs (works with DSS)
  • Unique project support (must gain permission from Writing Center administration)
  • Individualized support for athletes (must gain permission from Writing Center administration)
  • Professor recommendation
  • Consultant recommendation

How does it work?

If you are interested in applying for a weekly appointment, here's how it works:

  1. You must be eligible and/or have a need
  2. Fill out an Additional Services Request form and provide a brief explanation as to why you would like to start a weekly writing center appointment
  3. Then, the Writing Center will match you with a consultant based on your needs, availability, and any additional requests
  4. Once you've been matched, you'll receive email confirmation from our Office Coordinator with Terms & Agreements for this privileged appointment
  5. You will meet with your consultant every week until the end of the semester (please notify the Writing Center if you need to miss a session)

If you still believe you deserve or need a weekly appointment, but are not represented by the above list, feel free to contact Patrick Johnson, Writing Center Director ([email protected]).

Please Note...

Having a weekly writing center appointment is a unique service offered to a specific population of students. Please keep in mind these reminders if you have a weekly appointment scheduled with a consultant:

  • We expect you to attend each week
  • If it is necessary to be absent, call the Meijer Center for Writing during office hours
    • ((616) 331-2922); Mon-Thurs 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Fri 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun 2-6 p.m.
  • Please be on time for your session and call ahead if you will be late
  • You are allowed two cancellations. After your second no-show or cancellation, your scheduled weekly appointment may be discontinued and dropped from the schedule
