Rob first began working with the AEP in the spring of 2007 as an undergraduate and continued on the project as a graduate student. He graduated from GVSU in 2016 with a Master's degree and in 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. His independent project on the insulating properties of tundra vegetation as an undergraduate contributed to the paper "Soil Temperature and Thaw Response to Air Warming Varies with Changing Vegetation" which was published in the proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on Permafrost. Rob published several papers as a Master's student, two as first author. He moved on from GVSU in 2012 to pursue a career in education and has continued to work with the AEP as a teacher.
