Daniel Balice, '82

Mayor and active member in the Ionia community Daniel Balice, ’82 began his career as an Alderman in 1987. After graduating from Grand Valley State University with degrees in criminal justice and psychology, Balice continued to Cooley Law School where he graduated in 1985. Since then, he has been practicing law at McKaig and Balice, also in Ionia.

In addition to Mayoral responsibilities, Balice serves on the Board of Directors of the Ionia Memorial Hospital and as Board Chair of Sparrow-Ionia Hospital. He is also director of the Ionia Area Hospice, the area’s Habitat for Humanity, the Community Foundation, and the Ionia Free Fair. In the past, he has served on the boards of the Ionia Area Domestic Violence Program, the Ionia Jaycees, and the Ionia Regional Utilities Authority.
 
In his career, Balice has won numerous awards including Michigan’s Outstanding Young Mayor Award, Ionia Citizen of the Year, and the Ionia Public Schools Silver Slate Award.
 
He currently resides in Ionia with his wife, Janet and family dog, Vera who wears her blue and white GVSU collar with pride. The couple has two children, John and Leigh.
