Steven Hoort, '72

Upon receiving his B.S. in philosophy from Grand Valley State University, Steven Hoort, ’72 continued to the University of Michigan where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1975. Upon graduation, he acquired a clerkship for the Honorable James Harvey, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. In 1978, Hoort moved to Massachusetts where he currently practices law at Ropes and Gray.

As a partner of the firm, Steven Hoort, '75 specializes in bankruptcy law and was the law firm’s co-head of Bankruptcy & Business Restructuring Department. He has represented cases in real estate bankruptcy and multi-million dollar business and asset acquisitions. He also represents multiple hospitals in varying stages of debt restructuring.

In addition to practicing law, Hoort has been an adjunct professor at Northeastern University School of Law and on the faculty of the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors. He is also a fellow at the American College of Bankruptcy.

Hoort has been honored with awards such as Massachusetts Super Lawyers, Chambers USA’s American’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and The Best Lawyers in America. He currently lives in Boston, Massachusetts.
